1977 Lancia Scorpion # 1696 SALE PENDING

We purchased the Scorpion from a well known Fiat / Lancia person we could trust in Denver Colorado. We wanted a Rust Free, clean bodied car that would be a base to build our idea of what the Lancia Scorpion should be for us.
The car was a California transplant and had no issues. I drove the car to Wichita and began making plans for the restoration.


Engine:

I had decided on the 2 liter Fiat engine with dual 40 dcnf carbs as a base to work from.

The block was bored 4 over and balanced, 8 mm domed HC pistons brought the CR to 10.8/1. Lancia Euro Head and Alquati 43 / 83 intake cam to help the breathing. The exhaust cam is stock. This set up is good for low end torque on the street.

Carter Electric fuel pump, King fuel filter, AC Delco 90 Amp Alternator, Remote Fuel Filter, Bosch End Drive Electronic Distributor, Crane HP Ignition and much more make up the power plant.

The machine work and balancing was done by Race proven long time Fiat machine shop D.A.Clem of Wichita Kansas.

Assembly of engine was done by myself and my father-in-law, an aircraft certified technician, retired.

We have been very happy with the engine and would not change a thing.
Excellent dependability and drivability with a perky response.


Transmission:

The Trannie was checked out but after driving the car from Colorado the only need was for linkage replacement and some new seals. The car is a very consistent shifter with no hitches.


Suspension:

The entire suspension was removed from the car and gone thru. Chad from Monty Hospital supplied the Koni adjustable shocks and struts custom made.
We opted not to lower the car from stock for street driving, with the koni's, Chad has springs to lower the car easily should one decide to do it.
All new bushings, bearings and more came from Monty Hospital. The car is in perfect alignment on her Michelin Pilots.


Brakes:

The Brake booster was removed and Whoa Brakes up front with the original over sized pistoned rears work very well. I am very happy with the Whoa Brakes. Stainless Hoses, Chad's 037 Pedal upgrade from Monty hospital makes braking fun again.


Body:

As I mentioned we purchased # 1696 because we wanted a straight bodied, no rust base to start with. We chemically stripped all panels. We wanted no old finish to be left on the car. House of Kolor Paint Company provided the Epoxy Primer and All products used to repaint the car. The bare body was chemically etched and then primed and left to cure for 3 months. After Weeks of surface prep, House of Kolor Poly Urethane was applied. Four coats of Black with multiple coats of tinted and then clear Poly Urethane. This car is not painted with base coat clear coat. It is a 2 part Poly Urethane, for depth of color and durability. Before final wet sanding and polishing the car was set aside again for 3 months, allowing any shrinkage to show and be dealt with and allowing interior work to be done. This was a total recoating of the car. All compartments, wheels wells, ect have been treated. All removable items such as doors, hoods, bonnets, where removed and painted individually. All mechanicals where removed, Engine, Transmission, Suspension, Wiring, Air Conditioning, Radiators, Fans, interiors items, carpets, upholstery, All removed to the bare shell for epoxy and then paint.


Air Conditioning:

One of our requirements for a fun car to drive to FLU events was a good air conditioning system. I had done a couple before on other Fiats and felt I could upgrade the Scorpion to make her comfortable in our Southern climate in the summers.

I decided that the only part of the system I would retain would be the evaporator and blower box. I installed a larger condenser rated for 134a with complete new hoses and dryer. The evaporator was replaced with a tested and cleaned one and the blower box with motor rebuilt and sealed. The compressor is a Sanden 508 134-a model. The Air conditioning works very well.

In order to carry the AC system in the heat of summer a new radiator was installed with a completely update cooling system. This required a bit of re-plumbing of the Lancia system and the use of an internal t-stat. I honestly do not think this car can over heat with this system. It uses a bypass heater valve from Cadillac that makes for good flow thru the head with or with out the heater coil engaged.


Euro Mods:

Fiberglass Front and rear Bumpers and Head Lights from Monty Hospital add the Euro touch we all love.


Upholstery and Interior work:

Keeping with our desire to build a dependable and durable automobile for traveling to FLU events, we searched for the right color and type of material to use in the interior of our Scorpion. WE found a product called Lux Leather that fit our requirements very well. Most people believe the material is expensive leather when they see and feel the upholstery. But in fact it is a quality Vinyl sold specifically to the aircraft industry. Lux Leather is over 10 times more durable than leather and it has proven to be the right stuff for our Scorpion. Color of course had to be similar to Palomino .

You will not find any re-painted nor dyed interior upholstery; it is all new and properly done.

The seats have a little extra cush to them for long drives.

The top was replaced with a custom unit with Water proof marine grade
canvas.

Lumbar support inflators included in the seats. Steering wheel by Nardi, Stereo by Alpine with CD of course.

A very large amount of Dyno matt was used to give the occupants as quiet a ride as possible. Also the interior was coated for corrosion resistance as the entire car was.


Glass:

Windshield was sourced from England and replaced. I moved the rear view mirror attachment with a bracket to keep it off the glass.

Rear window was polished and the defrosting strips replaced to working condition.

All glass has been professionally tinted.


Bits & Pieces:

Mirrors are very special. I looked for months for these proper electric remote operated units and found old stock in Miami.

Ansa quad tip exhaust with re-chromed tips, in new condition.

Remote electric door locks.

Electric antenna

Electric engine bonnet release

Engine mounted oil and fuel pressure gauges

New ball joints, CV boots, bushings


In Good Company:

It should be said that the Scorpion was and is not our only Fiat/Lancia project. We have done several cars and will always be involved with the Marquis. Our 1978 Black Fiat Spider recently sold on EBay for Over $10,000.00 US. Last year we sold the 1982 Lancia Beta Zagato for $8,000.00 and our Lovely Brown 1978 Fiat Spider sits in the garage with a NEVER TO BE SOLD sign will always be our FIRST and LAST Fiat.

The Black Scorpion is a Total Restoration with very little regard to cost and total regard to detail. I have included some pictures of our other cars to show what company the Scorpion keeps. I hope you enjoy them and if your looking for such a Toy, you know where to find her.



My wife and I have had some marvelous times building and driving our Scorpion, It is time to find her a new home. Our lives have changed and we need to get on with it.

I know you can find a good driver Scorpion for 5-6 thousand dollars. We are not selling a good driver Scorpion. We are selling a three year project that we have spent much more than we are asking on. You can order a Monty from Europe for what we are asking but you will get a car no better than ours was when we purchased her. If you want the car that has won all the awards, and can be driven across country today, comfortable with dependability then please consider our Black Scorpion. # 1696
